Why is it more dangerous to drive at night?

When the sun sets in Kentucky, the roadways are still filled with people traveling to and from work, or going out for a night of fun. While you may be used to driving at night, it is important to realize the hidden dangers that may be present. In fact, you are three times more likely to be involved in a deadly car accident at night than you are while driving during the day, according to AAA. By recognizing the hazards that can appear at night, you may be able to minimize your risk of getting injured or killed in a car accident.

A lack of natural light can cause people to see differently and experience certain visual restraints that are not common during the day. When pulling out into traffic, it is more difficult to judge the distance and speed of an oncoming car. Furthermore, your peripheral vision may be affected. Headlight blindness can also occur when an oncoming vehicle shines their bright headlights in your direct field of vision. This can cause your vision to dissipate for several seconds or minutes after being flashed by the bright headlights. Older drivers may have an especially hard time, as a 50-year-old driver requires two times the amount of light to see well when compared to a 30-year-old, as reported by the National Safety Council.

The increased number of drunk drivers on the road at night, paired with more construction activity, can also increase the dangers. It is critical that you are fully aware of your surroundings and avoid any distractions that may inhibit your ability to react quickly to a situation.
