Texting while driving puts everyone at risk

by | Jan 27, 2019 | car accidents

It is a problem that many people in Kentucky openly acknowledge is a tremendously widespread issue. It is also a behavior that many people admit to participating in despite its potentially dangerous consequences. The controversial topic is texting while driving. Despite the numerous statistics demonstrating how dangerous and prevalent the problem is, many people still continue to give in to the temptation to check their phones or respond to messages while they are operating their vehicle.

According to Business Insider, 98 percent of the nation’s population is aware of how dangerous texting while driving is according to a survey that was conducted. What is alarming, is that over 50 percent of those same people admitted to using their phone and texting while driving at some point in their life. In another survey, nearly 25 percent of the people who participated did not make a correlation between texting and poor or dangerous driving habits. Thus, they did not believe that texting would affect their driving performance at all.

Efforts to enforce laws designed to ban the use of cell phones while driving is becoming more and more common in many states around the nation. The Federal Communications Commission suggests that people lead by example in their efforts to educate their friends, family and children about the dangers of texting and driving. It is also suggested that they be aware of the statistics so they can educate those around them about how much of an effect a moment of distraction can potentially create for many innocent people. When parents are preparing for their children to begin driving, they should provide education about the dangers of distracted driving, but also implement restrictions and consequences to help protect and teach their children.
