How can you help a wounded veteran?

If you have a family member or friend who has served in the military, you may have been faced with the sometimes-debilitating fear that he or she will be hurt while serving abroad. You may even know someone who has experienced the traumatizing effects of war and is currently trying to adjust to a new normal with mental and emotional challenges or physical disabilities that are the direct result of combat. Fortunately, there are simple things you can do to provide support, reassurance and encouragement to veterans in Kentucky who have been wounded and are faced with an uncertain future.

According to CNN, helping a veteran does not have to require significant amounts of time and money. In fact, small actions can do a lot to show your appreciation. Some of the things you can do include the following:

  • Donate your flying miles: If you are a frequent flyer, you may consider donating miles to the families of wounded veterans. This simple act may provide someone with the means to be at the bedside of a wounded loved one.
  • Make a care package and say thank you: You may consider putting together a care package to remind an unsuspecting veteran that he or she is supported at home. Better yet, go out of your way to thank the veterans you notice while out and about.
  • Sponsor a service dog: Find out what you can do to help sponsor a special service dog for a wounded vet. These animals play a critical role in providing companionship and comfort for soldiers who may be experiencing newfound disabilities.
