Can car crash victims develop PTSD?

by | Oct 13, 2017 | car accidents

You are probably familiar with all sorts of different hardships that people have to endure after a motor vehicle crash, from debilitating injuries to fatalities. However, it is important to keep in mind that some of these accidents have ramifications that may not be as evident immediately following the wreck. For example, people may suffer brain damage, experience depression, or develop post-traumatic stress disorder after a motor vehicle collision.

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has published information on their site which draws attention to the prevalence of PTSD among car accident victims. According to the results of one study, traffic accidents are responsible for traumatic stress among males in the U.S. more than any other factor. On top of PTSD, victims of these accidents may suffer from depression and other mental health issues. It is important to bear in mind that these mental challenges can create permanent roadblocks that alter the course of victims’ lives. Sometimes, crash victims may change their habits, lose their ability to work in a certain field, or suffer other setbacks due to post-traumatic stress and emotional struggles following an accident.

Sometimes, the full extent of damage that a car accident causes is not known until weeks or even months after the wreck. People who develop PTSD or sustain brain damage after hitting their head in a collision may find that their ability to enjoy life has been significantly diminished. As a result, reckless drivers who cause these hardships should never be able to get away with their actions.
