What is truck driver fatigue?

Accidents involving large trucks happen for many reasons, from intoxicated driving to speeding and poor weather. However, truck driver fatigue is a serious problem on roads across the state of Kentucky. Sadly, when those driving large trucks fall asleep at the wheel, the massive size of their vehicles can be especially hazardous.

According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, truck driver fatigue plays a major role in fatal accidents. In fact, a  study of large truck accidents showed that 13 percent of those driving a commercial vehicle that was involved in an accident were fatigued when the wreck happened. Truck driver fatigue can occur for different reasons, such as driving for too many hours and strenuous activities while working or outside of one's job. Inadequate sleep and certain types of medication can also leave a driver fatigued.

When a truck driver, or any other driver, becomes fatigued, their ability to drive safely may be impaired. Fortunately, there are various ways that truck drivers can address fatigue, such as eating healthy, avoiding some medications, taking naps, and ensuring that a sufficient amount of sleep is had each night. Drivers should also be aware of the risks that may come with depending on coffee to stay awake.

Unfortunately, more lives will continue to be lost and more people will be hurt in the future because some truck drivers fail to stay off the road when they are too tired. For victims of these wrecks, it is vital to go over all options on the table.
